About Phil Nugent
Founder & Managing Director
Phil Nugent has a passion for entrepreneurship that translates into a willingness to go the extra mile to help small businesses succeed.
Phil has more than 20 years of marketing and communications experience with organizations ranging from law firms and accounting firms to technology start-ups and members of the Fortune 500. He is a non-practicing attorney who discovered in the 1990s that this new thing called the internet held amazing promise to change the world. Thus began his journey away from the traditional post-J.D. career path to one that has embraced technology, marketing and entrepreneurship.
In addition to his background and education, what distinguishes Phil from many marketers is his belief that all marketing should be closely tied to a firm’s distinctive Unique Selling Proposition, a concept that incorporates a firm’s outstanding strengths, its most favored clients and its toughest competitors. To this point, he believes that perhaps the only thing worse than no marketing at all is the dreaded “Random Acts of Marketing.” That’s the all-too-common small business predicament in which plate after plate of proverbial pasta is thrown against the marketplace wall to see what, if anything, sticks.
Prior to founding NCG Strategic Marketing in 2009, Phil was the Director of Global Marketing for Prologis, a global real estate developer that was twice named by Fortune as the most admired company in real estate. Previous to his five years with Prologis, Phil founded the Nugent Consulting Group, a marketing and business strategy consulting firm that helped a diverse mix of businesses in the technology, financial and manufacturing industries. His work with the Nugent Consulting Group followed several years of working for web application firms in both technical and communications roles. Previous to this, Phil worked for five years as a contractor to the U.S. Department of Justice in the Denver office of its Environment & Natural Resources Division.
Phil received an M.B.A. from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder, a J.D. from the College of William & Mary and a B.A. from the University of Virginia.
